Birds like large shrubs and trees and wil land in them before taking food from a bird table. If the perches aren't available they won't come even if you put out food for them. Plant lots of shrubs with leaves down to the ground - like viburnum tinus, choisya, escallonia, euonymous etc which will give them a bolt hole should something startle them. Digging over a piece of ground will atract robins, blackbirds etc. A good allround food is sunflower hearts, all the birds in my garden will feed on them, blackbirds, robin, bluetits, greattits, finches, starlings and sparrows. thrushes come down if I put cheese out, and the wrens like to hop about in the containers.

Food scraps from the table attract the hedgehogs, and the dark damp places are a haven for frogs - even though I don't have a pond.

Early flowering shrubs like winter honeysuckle,(lonicera fragrantissima) clematis cirrhosa and helebores will attract huge bumble bees this time of year. Single flowers (with stamens showing) attract bees more than double varieties.
