An access point acts the same way a hub does, it is just a wireless connection to a network.
A router usually provides services like DHCP (provides IP address' for computers), hardware firewall, NAT, (provides many private internal IP address' that are invisible to the internet, with one outside IP address) as well as providing filtering and management of network computer internet access.
