Since oil comes from the ground why is it a big deal to dump used oil back into the ground?

I gotta change the oil in my truck today and last time I changed it I dug a big hole and dumped the oil in the ground but then I got yelled at. I am confused doesn't oil come from the ground?

Just pull out the plug and drive it down the road until its empty. They'll be none the wiser.
