Is an ophthalmologist the same thing as an eye surgeon?

You have to be an ophthamologist to do eye surgery (optometrists/opticians can't and other MDs/surgeons wouldn't), but you don't *have* to do eye surgery if you're an ophthamologist. Some specialize in other things like treatment of eye health conditions that don't require surgery.

I would imagine the show referred to him as an eye surgeon instead of an ophthamologist simply because it's easier for the audience to understand (a lot of people don't know the difference between the kinds of "eye doctors" or what exactly an ophthamologist is).
