My dad has shown some recent interest in guns, but commented he would love one like his old service pistol. Alas he has no idea what it was.

I would LOVE to buy him the same gun he used in the military for his birthday.

Can anyone help?

He says he was in the Vietnam Conflict
He was a Helicopter Crew chief in 191 Helicopter between 1968-1970
He also had a small stint as Military Police if that helps.

He said his patch was a Helicopter flying right at you with teeth.

Any help would be awesome.

Thank you

More than likely he carried a colt 1911. The 1911 is now made by almost every manufacterer that produces handgun. You will be able to everything from basic GI models for under $500 (these should only be used with FMJ (or ball) ammunition. To high end competition guns ranging in the high thousands. And of course everything in between.

These are all based off of the same design, but you may find differences in quality, fit and finish between designs.

And of course, even though the 1911 has been chambered in various calibers such as 9mm, .22lr, .38 super... the original, and by far most popular round is, and will always be .45ACP.
