Hi all, I've been wanting to be a marine scout sniper for a while now, and have already started training physically, and wanted to start learning to shoot a rifle, and was wondering what type of gun would be good for a beginner. I'm 16, about 5 foot 11 (if that matters for the size of the gun) and i'm getting a summer job, so my price range is around $1000-$1500. I'd prefer a rifle over a pistol. Thanks for the help!

I would say a Remington 700 SPS Tactical in .223 Rem. It allows you to practice with fairly cheap ammo, and once you find ammo that it likes, and a suitable scope (Leupold 3-9x40 to start with), IT can shoot accurately out to about 350 yards.

Now, once YOU learn proper fundamentals and send thousands of rounds downrange, you will be able to shoot the rifle to its full potential.

If you would rather have a more powerful caliber, the same gun is offered chambered for .308 Win (which is the caliber being used by M-24's at the moment, though some are being converted to .300 Win Mag).

But you should understand, shooting is only a small part of being a sniper, and there is a reason that the less experienced sniper in a team is the shooter and the more experienced is the spotter. Shooting is one of the easier aspects of a sniper's arsenal.
