My son wants to know why do worms come out of the ground when its raining?

When the water level is too high in their little dirt homes they can't breathe. Worms don't breathe through a nose like us...they breathe through their skin down the length of their bodies. If there is too much water around them they can't get air in. They move to higher ground. Even if they are on the driveway in the rain, they are not totally surrounded by water and can still take in enough oxygen to live.
