Are there ways around it? Why is the government forcing us to buy healthcare, especially those of us who don't need it?

Or am I wrong? Is it optional? I sure hope I am wrong. Otherwise, how can the government legally force us to buy anything? Especially is we don't need it?

The Constitution does prevent the government from forcing people to buy anything. However, policy can worded in such a way that it won't be actually be forcing us to give money directly from our bank accounts, but instead persuading us to do that or take the consequences. For instance, you could be prevented from taking advantage of other government benefits in the future that you are used to getting (eg. Medicare, tax breaks, bankruptcy option, etc.)

The government does not want to be financially responsible when you have an accident and you can't pay the bill. So it is in your best interest to have a cheap catastrophic insurance policy.

You have to look at the big picture.
