The VERY VERY VERY most is 8 hours. Most boxes will say this themselves. But, they strongly advise that 8 is the MAXIMUM.

Don't even leave it in 8 if you're bleeding heavily.

Why? toxic shock syndrome. Your risk is much increased by leaving tampons in longer than they should.

Even if you're bleeding very lightly (in which case, you should probably be using pads at that point in your cycle, not tampons, as the tampon could break because of not enough blood to make sliding it in and out of you easy), the very MOST you should leave a tampon in is 8 hours. If that means you have to set your alarm clock and get up JUST to change your pad, well, you either just have to suck it up and DO it, or wear a pad at night, because you can leave them in for slightly longer (again, only if your flow is NOT heavy).

First I used to prefer tampons, but I used to spend lot of money in buying tampon boxes, then my friend recommended me to use menstrual cups, these are really comfortable and reliable, as I don't have to buy it in boxes, one menstrual cup can last for years. It is better to prefer than tampons.
