Today in class we where reading We All Fall Down. At the begining their teacher explains how "Ring around the Rosie" is about the bubonic plague, including the fact that the last line, We all fall down, pretty much means "We all drop dead".

I just wanted to know some opinions on this, because I think it's disturbing that you see little children singing it.

The explanation about bubonic plague is widely accepted but wrong.

For a start these are not the symptoms of plague and the rhyme itself is first recorded far too late for it to be a 17th century folk memory.

It is true that many nursery rhymes do refer to political and other events in a way that we no longer find suitable for children
