Import tax? bought item off ebay i'm waiting for it from america?

bought item from america but now a friend mentioned import tax, i wasn't aware can anyone tell me how much it is? how you pay for it? does it effect the delivary of your item? i looked on hms customs but can't work it out, anyone had any experiances with it

miss terry got it right. you get a card through, you pay the charges if any, then they delivery.

as for how the charges are worked out, import duty varies from one item to the next which explains why not everyone shares the same experience. also, marking it as a gift means nothing really- for an item marked gift not be taxed it has to be of a value of £36 or less. import duty is charged on cost of goods plus shipping, VAT is always charged on the cost of goods, plus shipping, plus import duty. so the costs creep up anyway.

ring 01702366077, (customs classification line) tell them what the item is. they give you a reference for the items classification and give you the import duty rate. whatever the rate, it shouldn't end up being something stupid like - equal to the value of the item or something, so if you get stuck ring the national customs advice line on 0845 010 9000 option 2.
