Best Way to Give Water to Wild Birds?
Asked By BYBs Care For Money Not Dogs,Last Answer By Dances With Woofs! At 2011.04,1 Answers

It has been bitterly cold her the last couple weeks, and I have started setting out wild bird seed and peanuts for the birds and squirrels, but I don't know how to put water out for them so it doesn't freeze. I am on a tight budget so I can't afford to buy any sort of insulated or heated water-er.

I have some large aluminum dog dishes that are 'double sided'- there is a space between the outer and inner wall, and I was wondering if I could stuff newspaper in between the walls, if that would help keep it from freezing?

Any suggestions?

How do you take care of a birds of paradise plant in your yard?
Asked By NicosMommy,Last Answer By Paul in San Diego At 2010.01,1 Answers

We moved into a home that has 6 large birds of paradise planted along the front walkway. They were beautiful when we moved in but I have no idea how to take care of them and they look like crap. I was cutting back the dead leaves and flowers because they looked awful but I don't know if that's the right way to care for them. Right now it's winter and they are brown and ugly, how much can I cut back with out ruining them? How much and how often should I cut back in the summer and spring? Do they need more than water and sunlight? Help!

What type of bird is in my yard?
Asked By 7th Avenue Vagrant Chaser,Last Answer By Sims Brother At 2011.04,1 Answers

I'll do my best to give a good description.

It's a female, about the size of a humming bird. She's built a narrow but deep nest in one of our trees. She loves the hummingbird feeder. She's a greyish brown with a yellowish tint in the sun. I mistook her for a humming bird at first but of course she doesn't beat her wings nearly the same and has a small beak similar to a sparrow or finch. She is very slender.

If you can throw some possible names at me I'll try to confirm them with a google search.

Thank you.

Do wild birds flying into your house necessarily mean that someone you know is going to die?
Asked By Peggy S,Last Answer By Sleepy_Bird At 2011.04,1 Answers

ok so a family member had a wild bird to fly into her house, but she has a lot of birds around her residence though, and i do mean a lot!and the thin that freaks me out is that i am due to deliver our second baby june 3rd and i have a few health problems, and i am freaking out because i think the bird was meant for me,in 2009 me and my husband and son was staying at my mother and father's house and they had a friend named rick staying there as well, well he had been staying with all of us for 2 weeks and he had a heart attack in our yard, and the ambulance driver was too late and 2 and a half months before this happened a bird flew into or house and then out, that is really what freaks me out....so i am hoping someone on here might have some information of weather it has happened to them or knows if it means death,i am freaked out i tried looking it up on the net and the old wives tale states that it means good luck?and i have never heard anything like that before i have always heard that it means death? if it helps the type of bird was a brown finch.

Should we really feed wild birds when the weather is severe?
Asked By barefootwanderin,Last Answer By Andy At 2011.03,1 Answers

The Humane Society (see link below), The Nature Conservancy, Defenders of Wildlife and a number other other organizations with conservation ties are strong advocates for feeding birds in the winter months.

We created a significant presence in so many habitats that we've deprived a number of birds of not only food sources, but in some cases even shelter. It's only right that we do what we can to offset that impact.

The Humane Society advises to, "Keep your feeding schedule consistent," and to provide water when at all possible.

How to care for an injured wild bird?
Asked By ?,Last Answer By margecutter At 2011.04,1 Answers

I'm asking this for a friend; he rescued a swallow hit by a car. The bird acts brain damaged. It can't fly or orient itself, but will drink sugar water. Its wings work fine.

There are no animal rescue groups nearby that he knows of. He's wondering if he should even keep trying to keep it alive, and is worried that it's suffering. Any experience or advice?

Converting a Satellite dish into a bird bath?
Asked By Clevis the brain,Last Answer By Patriotic Jilibean At 2010.01,1 Answers

I found this old sat dish in the dumpster last week (a really BIG one, like four feet across) and I thought I could convert it into a bird bath. I have an old beer keg that I could just set the dish on then fill it with water. Do you think the neighbors would complain about that? They hate every thing I do.

Bird Question. Do birds adopt eggs?
Asked By FallenAngel©,Last Answer By Kerilyn At 2010.10,1 Answers

I have ran across bird nests with pretty blue eggs in them many times. Today I spied this one in my rose bushes and snapped the pic. These are obviously two different kinds of birds just judging by the egg sizes. Will one mother bird hatch all three of these babes or what happens? Can anyone identify the birds by the eggs? I was careful not to touch the eggs or any part of the nest.
here is a link to the pic of the eggs
